Summary
This is the fifth of six sessions where we will talk about three chapters in Matthew that are referred to as The Sermon on the Mount.
In this session, Jesus gives us four simple rules that can be very hard to follow. We could spend our entire lives working on just one of these rules. As we read, remember that God’s grace is always big enough to cover the places where we have failed. Pay attention to your heart as you read. If anything causes you to feel tension, make note of it. Often that tension is a signal that we have work to do in our heart.
Before You Read
Before beginning your reading pray:
“Lord, make my heart sensitive to Your Word. Show me any area of my life that I need to seek forgiveness for. And make it clear if I need make things right with people in my life. Amen.”
While you are reading, keep a pen and paper close by to write down:
Questions you have about words, actions or people
Things that you think are interesting
Thoughts about how you would have reacted
Connections between other Bible passages you have read before
Read Matthew 7:1-12
Where to find it: Matthew is in the New Testament. If you open your bible to the middle it will be in the right half of the book. It is between Malachi and Mark.
Write out the four rules from this passage in your own words.
Which of the four rules stated in this passage is easiest for you?
Is there someone who you have hurt recently by breaking one of these rules?
Discussion Questions
How did you rewrite the four rules? (If you are in a large group, ask four people to each share a different rule)
If you were honest with yourself, what do you judge others on most often?
Reread verses 1-5. Do you think Jesus is saying we should never judge others?
Do you think that God will give you anything you ask for? (v. 7-8)
Did you know that the Golden Rule came from the bible?
Verse twelve reads: “Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them.”
What do you wish that someone would do for you?
Is there someone in your life that you can do that for this week?
