Summary

This is the third of six sessions where we will talk about three chapters in Matthew that are referred to as The Sermon on the Mount.

Last session we learned about the laws given to the Israelites and how God wants us to be light in a world of darkness. Today’s reading goes through some of the laws that most people think they are not guilty of as well as ways that we think we are being good, but are not pleasing to God.

Before You Read

Before beginning your reading pray:

“Lord, as I sit and read, remind me of your Love and the depth of your Grace. Amen.”

While you are reading, keep a pen and paper close by to write down:

  • Questions you have about words, actions or people

  • Things that you think are interesting

  • Thoughts about how you would have reacted

  • Connections between other Bible passages you have read before

Read Matthew 5:21 - 6:4

Where to find it: Matthew is in the New Testament. If you open your bible to the middle it will be in the right half of the book. It is between Malachi and Mark.

Which part of this reading is most challenging to you?

When you read verses 5:21-26 about murder and anger, was there someone that came to mind?

Write down a date and time to call or write this person and commit to putting it on your calendar/to do list.

Look back through the passage and chose one verse to memorize. Write it down below three times.

Discussion Questions

Note: this week covers a lot of topics. You are not expected to go through every question. Chose the questions that best connect with and grow your group.

  • Did any of Jesus’ teachings contridict the Ten Commandments?

  • Why do you think Jesus says that angry outbursts are the same as murder in God’s eyes?

  • When is angry a sin?

  • In the worksheet you were asked to write down the name of a person that you need to make peace with. Would anyone like to share who they wrote down?

  • Ask someone to read Job 31:1-12. Why do you think adultery is not taken this seriously today?

  • In verse 5:37, Jesus says to not make promises you can’t keep and to not embelish your words, to simply say “yes or no.” Why is it so important for Jesus followers to be good at keeping their word?

  • In Matthew 5:44, it says to “love your enemies.” Would you say that you have enemies?
Ask someone to look up the definition of enemy. How often do you chose to love the people that are hostile or working against you? What does that look like?

  • What is accomplished by “turning the other cheek”?

  • When you give, do you seek praise for it?

  • What verse did you chose to memorize?
