Spring Break with God - God’s Creation
Spring Break with God - God’s Creation
Give God a portion of your Spring Break. He rejoices whenever you make space to spend time with Him.
The focus of this Spring Break devotional is to give God glory for his creation. You may be at the beach, or a lake house, or in the mountains. These settings, which are removed from our everyday life, can give us the opportunity to fully appreciate God’s great creation. Even if you aren’t traveling, you probably have the space to sit in your backyard, hangout on your balcony, or lay on a blanket at a park that you wouldn’t normally have. Make the effort to do this devotional outside, so you can experience nature while you are reading. If that option is not available to you, find a cozy chair near a window and know that God is present everywhere.
How to use this Devotional
You will need a journal (or your notes app), your Bible, and a favorite pen.
If you are in a group: Read the bible verses out loud together. Use the journal prompts as discussion questions.
If you are doing a solo devotional: Read through and complete the journalling prompts.
Day One
Read Psalms 104
Where to find it: Psalms is located in the middle of your Bible, if you open to Job or Proverbs, you have gone too far. It is the largest book in the Bible, so it’s pretty easy to locate.
Journal Prompts
Read through a second time, and write down a verse that stood out to you.
Take a moment to take in God’s creation. Watch the waves crashing on the beach. Look out the window and see the branches swaying. Touch the grass under your finger tips. Listen to the sounds of nature that never stop. Don’t rush through this process. Give yourself time to marvel at God’s beauty through His creation.
Write out a prayer telling God what you observed and giving God glory for giving us the earth.
Day Two
Read Romans 8:1-17
Where to find it: Romans is in the New Testament, it is after the gospels, between Acts and 1 Corinthians.
Journal Prompts
Verses 5-6 say “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Holy Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.” (NIV)
What does it mean to “live according to the flesh”?
How often do you have your mind set on God?
Do you feel like your life is full of God’s peace?
What areas of your life do you need to give over to God to gain the kind of peace your soul desires? If you do feel at peace, write a prayer giving God praise for this peace.
Day Three
Read Psalms 96
Where to find it: Psalms is located in the middle of your Bible, if you open to Job or Proverbs, you have gone too far. It is the largest book in the Bible, so it’s pretty easy to locate.
Journal Prompts
What do you have to be joyful for? What has God done recently in your life, or in your friend’s lives? Write out a prayer of praise thanking God for the good things he has done.
The passage today talks of people, plants, animals, and even the ocean singing God’s praises. Continue your quiet time today by putting on your favorite worship playlist the next time you are listening to music
Day Four
In today’s reading, Paul is talking to the people of Athens in Greece. Athenians worshiped many different gods, but not the true God. Paul observed that there was a statue dedicated to an idol of “an unknown god”. He begins to preach to the people, saying that what they are searching for has already come. Jesus is the one true God, that He had walked among us and taught us the right way to live.
Read Acts 17:24-31
Where to find it: Acts is a book of history about the establishment of the church after Jesus’ resurrection. It is located directly after the gospels, between John and Romans.
Journal Prompts
Reread the first verse, verse 24. Does it give you comfort to know that God is everywhere?
Look through the verses and make a list, or highlight in your Bible, all the things that God made.
This passage warns us not to mistakenly worship God’s creation, and that we should be worshiping the Creator. While we do not have gold statues that we worship like the Greek’s did, there are other things we worship without realizing it. Anytime we make something that was created more important God, we are worshiping that thing. God is the only person worthy of our worship. Write out a prayer asking God to make it clear to you what idols you have in your life.
Day Five
If it fits in your schedule and the weather is good, do this day’s devotional at night under the stars.
Read Isaiah 40:21-31
Where to find it: Isaiah is a book of prophecy. It is between Song of Songs (sometimes labeled Song of Solomon) and Jeremiah.
Journal Prompts
Reread the passage and choose a verse to write down in your journal.
If you are reading this at night, lay back and look up at the stars. If it is day time, look out at the ocean, trees, grass, or any part of God’s creation you have before you. Think about the largeness of the universe and how God is in control of all of it. That you can rest in the fact that God is in control. Allow yourself to sit and meditate on the words you just read and the nature around you. Soak up the peace this brings and let it carry you forward as you leave Spring Break and go back to a typical week of school and life.
